About Chifen

The Nurse Who Codes — Healthcare, Software, Research, and Community Innovation.

Executive Summary

Chifen Sama Nduma ("The Nurse Who Codes") is a self-trained software engineer, registered nurse, and health technology researcher currently pursuing an M.Tech in Data Science at the College of Technology (COLTECH), The University of Bamenda. Working at the convergence of clinical practice, autodidactic software architecture, and artificial intelligence, he designs resilient digital health platforms engineered specifically for resource-constrained environments.

Chifen Sama Nduma holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Science from Gracious Higher Institute of Excellence (mentored by the University of Bamenda) and is currently enrolled in the Master of Technology (M.Tech) in Data Science program at the College of Technology (COLTECH), The University of Bamenda. His undergraduate thesis investigated "Knowledge, Attitude, and Factors Influencing the Implementation of Artificial Intelligence in Clinical Decision-Making Among Health Professionals at Buea Regional Hospital," conducting an empirical 387-respondent cross-sectional study (92.4% response rate) that established foundational readiness metrics for clinical AI in Cameroon.

A 100% self-trained software engineer, Chifen taught himself systems programming, distributed backends, and low-bandwidth mobile protocols through real-world trial and open-source grit alongside demanding clinical nursing shifts. Following his tenure as District Data Manager and PMTCT Departmental Head for Kumba South District Health Service—where he automated DHIS2 local-to-cloud facility synchronization pipelines and elevated reporting completeness above 95%—he architects LifeDrop, an asynchronous emergency blood dispatch network leveraging the WhatsApp Cloud API to achieve zero-install donor triage.

In parallel, he serves as Lead Engineer for CoastClear, building offline-first spatial logging and localized computer-vision dashboards for coastal conservation, and Co-Founder & CEO of INKWAVE, a digital storytelling and developer advocacy agency advancing technical communication across Central and West Africa. Chifen's work demonstrates that technology in emerging markets must be designed not for idealized lab conditions, but for the ward, the power cut, and the 2G connection.

Engineering Philosophy

Three principles that govern everything I build

  1. 01

    Clinical Domain Insider

I trained and worked as a registered nurse before I built software. That matters because the gap between what a health product claims to do and what actually happens in a ward is almost always invisible to people who have never worked in one. I have seen a blood transfusion delayed because nobody could find a compatible donor in a city that had one. I have seen a form that does not ask the right question. I have seen what fails at two in the morning and what holds. That is not user research. It is structural knowledge, and it changes what gets built.

  2. 02

    African Technical Resilience

Most health software is built for conditions that do not exist in most of the world: reliable power, fast internet, smartphones with storage to spare, users who have time to learn an interface. I build for what is actually there. Low data. Unreliable power. A basic Android phone rather than a laptop. A language a government form does not offer. That is not a constraint I work around. It is a design specification I start from.

  3. 03

    Community Architecture

Ayodah built a real network — 400 donors, 3 hospitals, 5 NGOs — and the app still died at the install screen. That is the lesson LifeDrop is built on. Coordination infrastructure only works if it lives where people already communicate. The 2 a.m. message asking for a blood donor was never going to stop. What changed was where I answered it.

Off Duty & Creative Life

Certified drone pilot, pencil sketch artist, photographer, chess player, anime enthusiast, and voice-over experimenter. I have little patience for rules that lack reasons, and deep respect for systems that survive bad days. I am convinced that African digital health can be engineered at a vastly greater scale than yesterday's attempts.
